Case study: Structural Optimization via Generative Design and 3D FDM Printing | REIMAN
The Challenge
Traditional manufacturing methods impose geometric limits, often resulting in unnecessarily heavy parts and costly prototyping.
Project objective: To create a support structure (table and stools) that maximizes mechanical resistance while minimizing material consumption, with a time-to-market impossible to achieve through conventional means.
Technical Solution
REIMAN combined two disruptive technologies to meet the challenge.
-
Generative Design: It uses algorithms to define the ideal material distribution based on specifics load points.
-
Additive fabric (FDM): It uses EON PET engineering polymer.
-
Tensile strength: 50 MPa.
-
Thermic stability: Up to 68°C
-
Advantages: Direct production, with no needs for molds.
-
Results and Metrics
The real impact of REIMAN´s solution in numbers.
| Metrics | Traditional method (Steel based estimate) | REIMAN Solution (Generative design + 3D) | Advantages |
| Structures weight | 395kg | 34kg | - 91% |
| Waste of material | High (Machining) | Near zero (Additive Manufacturing) | Total optimization |
| Number of components | Multiple machined and assembled components | 3 printed and assembled parts | Reduction of assembling complexity |
| Manufacturing complexity | CNC machining with multiple setups | 3D printing in 3 modules | Simplified process |
| Geometric freedom | Limited by manufacturing | Complex geometries | Higher design flexibility |
Performance Testing
The structure was subjected to rigorous stress tests, in which the complex design, impossible to manufacture through traditional techniques, proved capable of achieving excellent performance in the distribution of vibratory and static loads.
Conclusion and Industrial Applicability
This project demonstrates that 3D printing with technical polymers is not for mock-ups or prototypes only, but for high-performance end-use components in sectors such as:
-
Automotive Sector: Wiring supports, complex brackets, and interior components.
-
Industrial Equipment: Jigs, fixtures, custom tooling, and optimized replacement parts.
