What is a Linear Actuator?
The linear actuator is an electric device that allows movement in one direction, for both ways, through a linear system. A linear actuator’s versatility allows it for pushing and pulling, going up or coming down, inclining, sliding and adjusting the applied object attached to it.
A linear actuator grants a lifelong run, with little to no maintenance necessity, and gives the operator full control over how the actuator is used. In comparison to hydraulic or pneumatic systems, a linear actuator is easier to install in an application, as well as less expensive.
The linear actuator is mainly composed by a gearbox that attaches the electric motor to a lead screw put inside the cover tube. When the motor is started, the motor’s rotational movement is transferred to the lead screw, through the gearbox. The movement provided in the lead screw allows the screw nut implemented in the lead screw, together with the extension tube, to be driven or retracted inside the cover tube according to the rotational direction of the motor.
The types of linear actuators that Hiwin supplies can be summarized in two series:
LAS
LAN
The LAS series actuators have a DC electric motor in a position parallel to the cover tube and feature a more compact and lightweight structure. The maximum thrust range is 1200N, and they are IP54 protected, which means that LAS actuators have a certain protection against dust and liquids.
The LAN series actuators have a DC electric motor in a perpendicular position to the rest of the actuator structure, and their thrust force is higher and more silent. These actuators have a maximum thrust range of 8000N and IP66 protection, which means that LAN actuators are very resistant to liquids and dust and are suitable for outdoor use.
These linear actuators are suitable for use in the following applications, among others:
•
Automation Equipment
•
Door and Window Drives
•
Movable Furniture
•
Wheelchairs
•
Hospital Beds
•
Household Equipment
•
Patient Lift
•
Treatment Tables
