Engineering for Sustainable Development

Engenharia para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável

Engineering is a vital discipline that contributes to human well-being, drives innovation, solves problems, stimulates the economy and promotes sustainability. Through its contributions, engineering has a transformative and significant impact on the world.

The world engineering day for sustainable development was officially proclaimed by UNESCO in 2019 and it is celebrated on March 4th. The theme for 2024 is: Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World.

In this context, we highlight some sustainable solutions developed by REIMAN for various industrial applications:

Wolweiss Technical Aluminium for Photovoltaic Structures

The Wolweiss System is an extruded aluminum profile system with an anodized surface finish, making it one of the most flexible and economical ways of designing structures for solar panels. The anodized coating makes the profile durable, as well as resistant to weather and corrosion.

Aluminium Profile in a Automated Storage System

The demand for efficiency and flexibility in automated storage systems is constant, driven by the increasing complexity and dynamics in resource and space optimization. In this context, REIMAN was driven to develop an aluminium profile structure designed for an automated storage system.

The world engineering day for sustainable development aims to increase the visibility of engineering, promote the profession and encourage future generations to pursuit this field of study.

This day also represents an opportunity for collaboration between governments and industries worldwide, in order to develop strategies and practices to deal with impact of climate change and other environmental issues, with the growth of cities and populations, and with the emergence of several technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Engenharia para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável

There is much to be done, specially to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by all United Nations Member States by 2030. These goals include access to potable water, quality education, renewable and affordable energy, peace, justice and effective institutions, among others.

Although the implementation of 2030 Agenda requires a significant effort from governments, the private sector is essential for its achievement.

In summary, engineering is celebrated to acknowledge all its significant contributions throughout history. However, this day it also serves as a reminder of the work that still lies ahead.
